Central Industrial Security Force

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) (established in its present form: 15 June 1983) is a Central Armed Police Force in India.

It was set up under an Act of the Parliament of India on 10 March 1969 with a strength of 2,800. CISF was subsequently made an armed force of the Republic of India by another Act of Parliament passed on 15 June 1983. Its current active strength is 144,418 personnel[4]. In April 2017, the government raised the sanctioned strength from 145,000 to 180,000 personnel.[5]

It is directly under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and its headquarters are at Delhi / NCR.

The CISF provides security cover to 300 industrial units, government infrastructure projects and facilities and establishments located all over India.

Industrial sectors like atomic power plants, space installations, mints, oil fields and refineries, major ports, heavy engineering, steel plants, barrages, fertilliser units, airports and hydroelectric/thermal power plants owned and controlled by Central Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), and currency note presses producing Indian currency are protected by CISF. It thereby covers installations all over India straddling a variety of terrain and climatic conditions. CISF also provides consultancy services to private industries as well as other organisations within the Indian government. The consulting wing has amongst its clients some of the renowned business houses and organisations of India including TISCO, Jamshedpur; SEBI Hqrs. Mumbai; Vidhana Sabha, Bangalore; Orissa Mining Co., Bhubaneswar; Telangana Assembly, Hyderabad; Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corp.; HIL Kerala;IB Thermal plant, Odisa; IARI, Delhi; NBRI, Lucknow and Electronics City, Bangalore. The scope of CISF’s consulting practice includes security consulting and fire protection consulting.

CISF is just a unique organisation in paramilitary forces for India, which works for sea ways, airways and some of the major installations in India. In CISF there are some reserved battalions which works with the state police to protect law and orders. CISF plays a major role in Disaster Management, for Disaster Management course the personnel are trained from NISA, Hyderabad. Another unique thing which the CISF has is a Fire Wing which helps during fire accidents in Industries where CISF is on guard.

How to Join in CISF

Advertisement related to recruitment of the Enrolled Members in CISF will be advertised in Employment News/Rojgar Samachar and leading news papers of country. Recruitment to the posts of sub-inspectors and assistant commanders are open to graduates while for junior positions eligibility is a school leaving certificate. Preference will be given to NCC certificate holders.  Women can also join in Central Industrial security force as officer cadre.

The recruitment process for various post in ITBP is as follows :

Assistant Commandant

Entry to Group ‘A’ rank structure begins at the level of Assistant Commandant. Recruitment to the rank of Assistant Commandant (Junior Time Scale) takes place from four sources, viz. 50% by promotion from the rank of Inspector, 10% by absorption of security officers from PSUs, 10% by re-employment of ex-army officers and 30% by direct recruitment through Civil Services Examination.

The training for Assistant Commandant is conducted in NISA, Hyderabad. After training, officers can join as Assistant Commandants in the Junior Scale. Thereafter, a few years later they are eligible for promotion to the rank of Deputy Commandant, which is in the Senior Scale. After that CISF officers can hope to become Commandants or Additional Inspector General.

Sub Inspector

Recruitment of Sub Inspector in CISF are through Limited Departmental Competitive Examination (LDCE). Only Constable/GD, Constable/Tradesmen, Head Constable/GD and Assistant Sub Inspector/Exe who have completed 4 years service including the period of training are eligible for examination of LDCE.

Eligibility :
The eligibility conditions for appearing in the aforesaid competitive examination will be as under: – 

a)  Service Eligibility  Candidate should have completed four years of service including basic training
b)  Upper age limit 32 years. Relaxable by 5 years for SC/ST candidates. No age relaxation is applicable for OBC candidates as no vacancy is reserved for OBC category. OBC candidates can apply as General candidates.
c)  Educational qualification Graduation from any recognized University.
e)  Physical Standard : As applicable to SI (Direct entry) candidates which are as under:
i)  Height  Male  Female 
For all candidates  157  170 Cms. Cms. 
Candidates falling in the categories of Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Gorkhas, Dogras, Marathas and candidates belonging to the States of Sikkim, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Meghalaya, Assam, Himachal Pradesh,  Kashmir and Leh & Ladakh regions of J&K.   165 Cms  155 Cms.
All candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes.  162.5 Cms.  154 Cms.
ii)  Chest (For male only)
For all candidates   80-85 Cms.
All candidates belonging to Scheduled Tribes.  77-82 Cms.
iii) Weight- for all candidates – Corresponding to height and age as per medical standard.
f)  Medical category : SHAPE-I
g)  No. of chances applicable to compete in the LDCE Three chances only. Those who have already availed three chances will not be eligible to compete in this examination

Selection Procedure:

The selection will consist of the following: – 

i)  Stage-I  Checking of service records.  No marks are allotted. However, it should be ensured that candidates must have good ACRs for the last 04 years and unblemished service record till issue of offer of appointment. 
ii)  Stage-II  Written Examination Written Examination will comprise of OMR Based question paper. There shall be one question paper of objective type multiple choice questions consisting of 200 marks with 3½ Hours duration to assess the candidates in the following subjects :
Time : 03 ½ Hours.  Marks : 200.
1. General Intelligence and reasoning – 50
2. General awareness & Professional knowledge – 50
3. Numerical ability  – 50
4. Comprehension and communication skill  – 50
Important : It will be necessary for each candidate to secure at least 45% marks in each part and 50% in aggregate. Relaxation of 5% marks will be given to candidates belonging to SC/ST categories. 
iii) Stage-III Physical measurement.  As applicable to SI/Exe (Direct Entry) candidates as mentioned in Para-6(e) above. No relaxation will be given in case a candidate has been appointed in lower rank with relaxed standard, such candidate will not be eligible to appear in the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination. 
iv) Stage-IV Physical Efficiency Test.  It will be of qualifying nature consisting of the following five items. PET shall not carry any

a) 1.6 Kms race in 6 minutes 30 seconds  b) 800 Meters race in 4 minutes 
b) 100 Mtr race in 16 seconds  a) 100 Meters race in 18 Seconds 
c) High Jump 3.9 feet in 3 chances  d) High Jump 3 feet in 3 chances 
d) Long Jump 12 feet in 3 chances  c) Long Jump 9 feet in 3 chances 
e) Shot Put (16 Lbs) 14.8 feet in 3 chances 
v)  Stage-V Medical Examination  Detailed medical examination of those candidates who come out successful in the Written Examination & PET will be conducted as per existing instructions and guidelines issued vide MHA UO No.I-45023/1/206-Pers.II (Part.III) dated 07.02.2008. Each candidate will be declared either “Fit” or “Unfit”, and no one will be categorized “Temporary Unfit”. 

Final Selection

Name of candidates will be placed in the merit list subject to the provision that candidates belonging to General category have secured minimum 50% aggregate marks i.e., 100 marks out of a total of 200 marks and candidate belonging to SC/ST category have secured minimum 45% aggregate marks i.e. 90 marks. Final selection of candidates will be made according to availability of vacancies and subject to their declaring ‘Fit’ in the medical examination. 


Constable (General Duty)

Constable/ GD recruitment is carried out by SSC (Staff Selection Commission). The recruitment will comprise of Physical Standards Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Written Examination and Medical Examination. Constabulary forms the major component of the forces. The working mainly depends upon the effectiveness of the personnel at this level. Therefore, it is important that only candidates having the right aptitude, capability and fitness in all respects apply for the posts.

Eligibility :
The educational qualification for the Constable/GD in CISF is 10th class pass from recognized board/university. The candidates who produce certificate other than the recognized State/Central Board have to submit Certified True Copy of Govt. of India Notification declaring such qualification equivalent to Matric/10th Class pass for service under the Govt. of India. In case of failure to submit the same, their candidature may be rejected.

  1. Physical Standards Test (PST) : 
    (Female candidates are eligible for posts earmarked for them only)

Physical standards laid down for the post of Constable are : 

a)  Height : For Males : 170 cms.
For Females  : 157 cms.
b) Chest :  For males only – Unexpanded  : 80 cms
Expanded : Min expansion 5 cms
c)  Weight :  For males and Females : Proportionate to height and age as per medical standards


Relaxation in Height, weight and Chest are available for candidates falling in the categories of Garhwalis, Kumaonis, Dogras, Marathas and candidates belonging to the States of Assam, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, North Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim & Tripura and candidates hailing from Gorkha Territorial Administration (GTA) comprising of the three SubDivisions of Darjeeling District namely Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Kurseong

Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

Candidates who are found eligible on height parameters will undergo :

  • Height Bar Test
    The candidates will be put through the Height Bar test and qualified candidates will be sent for 5 Km race. 
  • Race (PET)
    After height bar test, the candidates will be subjected to 5 kilometers race to be completed within 24 minutes. 
  • Physical Standard Test (PST)
    Candidates, who are qualified in race, will be screened first for height, chest and weight measurements. 
  • Documentation
    The candidates who qualify in the Physical standard Test will be required to produce all relevant documents, in original only
  • Biometric verification
    Finger impression in respect of registered candidates will be captured immediately and will be verified on subsequent recruitment tests to avoid impersonation


  1. Written Examination

The candidates qualifying in PST/PET will be called for a Written Examination. Though the Commission will endeavour to accommodate the candidates in centres opted by him / her, it may combine the centres or divert the candidates to other centres, depending on administrative convenience. 

The Written examination will consist of only one objective type paper containing 100 questions and carrying 100 marks, with the following composition –

All questions will be of Objective Multiple Choice Types. Questions will be set bilingually in Hindi and English/ Trilingually in English and Hindi/Kashmiri (Urdu Script for J&K), Marathi (Maharashtra), Gujarati (Gujarat), Malayalam (Kerala), Kannada (Karnataka), Telegu (Andhra Pradesh),Tamil (Tamil Nadu), Oriya (Odisha), Bengali (West Bengal and Tripura), Punjabi (Gurmukhi script for Punjab), Assamese (Assam & Arunachal Pradesh), Manipuri (Manipur) and Mizo (Mizoram). Accordingly the paper can be answered in any of these languages in Parts A, B and C. Candidates are required to attempt either Hindi or English section of Part ‘D’ of the question paper.

        Visual correction of any kind is not permitted even by glasses. CP-II BY ISIHAR A -In right handed person, the Right eye is better eye and vice versa. 
-Binocular vision is required.


(i) The candidates must not have knock knee, flat foot, varicose vein or squint in eyes and they should posses high color vision. They must be in good mental and bodily health and free from any physical defect likely to interfere with the efficient performance of the duties.

(ii) Only those candidates who have scored above the cut off marks fixed by the Commission in Written Examination will be required to appear in the Medical Examination. The Commission shall have the discretion to fix different qualifying standards for candidates belonging to different categories in different states/UTs, taking into consideration vacancies allotted to each State/UT.

(iii) The selected candidates will be medically examined to assess their physical and medical fitness as prescribed in the eligibility conditions. 

(iv) Medical Test (X-Ray & laboratory) shall be conducted only for such candidates who are found fit after initial medical examination.

(v) In case of medical examination, “temporary unfitness” will not be allowed. However, any such female candidate who during the medical examination is found to be pregnant of twelve weeks standing or above, she shall be declared temporarily unfit and her appointment held in abeyance until the confinement is over.

(vi) Candidates declared unfit may file an appeal/representation within 15 days of rejection by the medical board.

(vii) Those candidates who are found fit on appeal by the Appeal Panel (Review Medical Board) and who meet the merit criteria fixed by the Commission for final selection, subject to availability of vacancies , will be placed in the “Reserve List” and recruited against unfilled vacancies. The candidates in the Reserve List will be en-masse junior to the candidates in the ‘Select List’.

(viii) Testimonials of the candidates will be checked at the medical examination stage.

(ix) The nodal force will provide the list of medically fit candidates to SSC
